As I was zooming along this busy pathway, I decided to put the issues I taught into the form of books for children and their families, as well as for teachers and students. I chose the name “Splunkunio Splunkey Detective and Peacemaker” as the name of my children’s series. The series includes the themes of friendship, teamwork, and problem-solving.

In continuing the children’s series, I noticed the uglier sides of humanity, domestic violence, shootings and the consequential deaths, bullying and cyber-bullying—sometimes resulting in suicide. This pushed me to write the second book in this series - “Case Two: Big Bully Holly Howler” - a story about the transformation of a bully into a friend! This book focuses on a core foundation of high, ethical values and a positive strong character, which becomes the base for how we should communicate and interact with each other.

BIG BULLY HOLLY HOWLER came out in English and English -Spanish editions.

SECTION II

During those six years, I expanded my program to include older students and adults. Based on issues from the news and learning from the students, I started Great Imaginings, Inc., a not-for-profit corporation. I researched and presented new presentations on such topics as Self-Esteem, Character Development, Drug Education and Conflict Resolution-Mediation. Throughout the years, I presented programs to more than 300 Chicago public schools, as well as schools in the surrounding suburbs.

Years back I partnered with Glenview Cable to create, co-produce and host a 4-part television series called “My Hometown.” Accompanied by Spokespuppet Splunkunio Splunkey, and Ellie Elephant, I visited the Glenview post office, police department, fire department and The Grove, interviewing an employee at each location or inviting the interviewee to the cable studio. It was lots of work, but at the same time, lots of fun!

if you have not seen the 2-page article I wrote in October, 2020, which appeared in the November issue, 2020 of the new magazine Northbrook Living, then this is a great time to learn about how my life changed dramatically when I moved to Chicago. This is a biographical look at the last thirty plus years of my life. I will be sharing sections from the article in the chronological order they appear in the magazine, and incorporating varied photos along the way.

SECTION I

Over three decades ago, I decided to move to the Chicago area. One of my first jobs was with Highland Park Hospital. With a doctoral degree in Ugaritology from NYU, this connection was really great because my dissertation dealt with “healers.” The hospital administrators had purchased the rights to a health and safety series called KidSafe, which focused on child abuse prevention programs for young children.

For six years, accompanied by my friend and colleague, Puppet Ellie Elephant, I talked with kids about coping strategies for abusive issues in schools, homes and in the community. To add a more personal touch to the programs, I created posters for display and wrote poems and songs that Ellie and I recited and/or sang for enthusiastic audiences.

VOICES AND VISIONS: STANDING ON THE BRIDGE BETWEEN HEALTH & DISEASE at THE ART CENTER - HIGHLAND PARK Aug.14 - Sept. 26, 2020

Dr. Elana Ashley has been invited to participate in the upcoming art exhibition at THE ART CENTER - HIGHLAND PARK. The event is entitled VOICES AND VISIONS: STANDING ON THE BRIDGE BETWEEN HEALTH AND DISEASE. The art show is open August 14 - September 26, 2020. However they are having an OPEN RECEPTION September 11, 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm.

Artist Elana Ashley will be displaying three paintings at VOICES AND VISIONS. One painting relates to the July 4th, 2020 Independence Day Celebration that never took place this year at Navy Pier in Chicago. A second painting shows The Statue of Liberty with the background of a colorful sunset. The 3rd painting will be a surprise! These three paintings are part of an art series that Ashley has been working on for the past year, and that series — entitled THE UNVEILING OF THE UNIVERSE AND BEYOND — will be presented at the Winnetka Community House in November, 2020, sponsored by the North Shore Art League. For the past seven months, Dr. Elana Ashley has been working on an exciting art project entitled THE UNVEILING OF THE UNIVERSE AND BEYOND. The artist is hoping to complete another 15 works of art - paintings and mixed media - and looks forward to presenting displays of her artwork in the Chicago metropolitan area. and perhaps in nearby communities in Wisconsin.
